Humphrey

Humphrey came to us mid-Summer 2018 at around 8 years old with his alpaca buddy Elvis.  He was promptly vetted, had his teeth and nails trimmed, was castrated, vaccinated, sheared and treated for mange.

​

He is from an expensive lineage and would have been rejected due to his darker saddle back.  The preference being for lighter dye-able fleece.  His fleece is exceptionally thick.

​

Unfortunately, he had not been sheared in several years and his skin could not breath, causing a thick crust to form.  Leisa and some willing volunteers became expert alpaca wranglers, giving medicated baths and exfoliation to heal his skin.  He was not thankful!

​

Humphrey is the dominant alpaca and will let out shrill chirps to warn the herd of danger.  Usually the danger is a resident pig walking around the property.  He thinks pigs are pretty shady looking characters!

​

He has not been handled so is wary of strangers. It is quite normal for Humphrey to be working up a full on spit-fit toward newcomers. He is also known to take a good run at them to try and scare them away. Slowly we are convincing him to let us pet him. 

 

He is an alert and curious fellow.  Often we are doing a task only to feel like we are being watched.

Elvis

Elvis is the dweeb of the sanctuary.  He is gangly and awkward with an under bite and bucked teeth.  He follows his friend Humphrey around constantly looking for direction. "Where we goin' now, Hump?"  "What are we doin' today, Hump?"

​

We simply can't help but be amused by Elvis.  We try so hard to honour him and not to think of him like a cartoon character as we have vowed to respect all our residents.  Yet, he really seems like a caricature!
